Cough is an action that clears an
irritated area of the lungs or throat. It is a common symptom of a number of
disorders, such as a common cold, influenza, or a minor respiratory illness. A
cough may also accompany a serious lung disorder or heart disease, a cough that
last for more than a few days requires the attention of a physician.
CAUSES OF COUGHING
Smoking can produce a cough, especially in the morning
because most people who smoke the lining of the air passages to the lungs are
damaged and the lungs fail to empty themselves naturally during the night.
TREATMENT
Cough is a protective mechanism, and treatment that
completely suppresses it could do more harm than good; when a person coughs, a
deep breath is taken in, the vocal cords close, and pressure builds up within
the lungs. When the cords open, a violent expulsion of air takes place as the
body attempts to expel any foreign material in the throat or lower respiratory
tract.
A dry cough can be treated by eating something dry; these
may help to stop the irritating tickle in the throat. In a dry, overheated
room, a vaporizer can relieve congestion of the nose and throat membrane.
Sometimes a dry cough, especially in a child, can be exhausting as in whooping
cough or some other virus illnesses that commonly occur during the winter
months. In such cases a medicine that suppresses the cough to some extent is
helpful, but should only be taken at the prescription of a physician.
