WHAT IS AN ALLERGY?
This is a
condition in which the body reacts with unusual sensitivity to a certain
substance/substances. These substances usually consist of proteins which are
known as ANTIGENS. They stimulate the body to produce antibodies, which weaken
or destroy the invading antigens; in some cases when an antibody reacts with an
antigen, the organic compound HISTAMINE is released from special body cells
called cells. It is excess of HISTAMINE that results in allergy symptoms.SYMPTOMS OF ALLERGY
A runny
nose and watering or itching eyes are familiar to many persons who suffer each
year from hay fever. In asthma, there is wheezing; with eczema and hives there
is itching, redness, and lumps. Contact dermatitis, an inflammation of the
skin, may occur possible from wearing hand gloves or touching certain chemical,
such as some kinds of soap. A reaction to antibiotics particularly penicillin,
may be in the form of a rash.
WHY ARE SOME PEOPLE ALLERGIC TO CERTAIN SUBSTANCES AND NOT OTHERS?
One of the
major causes of these is due to hereditary factors. Certain families seem to be
more liable to allergies than others, although particular allergies are not
necessarily inherited. Emotional disturbance too can set off allergic
conditions, and many physicians believe that asthma and emotional factor may be
the main reason for starting an allergy attack.
DANGERS OF ALLERGY'S
A mild
reaction usually causes a rash, but a violent one can cause difficulty in
breathing for the patient. This is an emergency condition and an expert should
be consulted to contain the situation, although this condition is not common.
Any reaction to an insect sting or antibiotic drug such as penicillin is
potentially dangerous and can even be fatal.
TREATMENT
When the
cause of allergy is known, the patient can under-go desensitization with
injections of the allergen known to cause the symptoms. If the cause of the
allergy is not known, or if the reaction is already taking place, an expert may
prescribe ANTIHISTAMINE pills or A nasal and lung sprays to control
the symptoms.
