DRUG ADDICTION
Drug addiction or drug dependence refers to the uncontrollable craving for a drug. Such craving may occur periodically or continuously and is usually accompanied by an overwhelming compulsion to obtain the drug. The addict becomes pre-occupied with thoughts about the anticipated effects of the drug.
 
Drug addiction may result from a physical origin, psychological origin or both, the craving for some drugs may develop within a short time as 24 hours. In a person who is physically addicted to a drug, the person body, the body chemical process are altered, so that the drug becomes very essential for some of the body's normal metabolic functions. It is very important to NOTE  that drug dependence does not involve a modification of the body's chemistry, but the addict believes that the drug is needed to function properly.
 

REASONS WHY PEOPLE ABUSE DRUGS.
people abuse drugs for various reasons they include;
  • People take drug out of curiosity and boredom,
  •  Some take drugs because their friends or peers do and they also need to conform,
  • For others, they go into drug addiction because of difficult problems, such as large debt or unemployment which makes them frustrated, depressed or anxious, they feel trapped by problems that seem to have no solution and seek a release from reality in the effects of the drug.
The likelihood of a person becoming a drug addict depends on three major factors which are; the social environment, the personality of the individual and of course the type of drug involved. 
Due to the difference in body metabolism in humans, some people are more sensitive to drug reaction than others, they may feel euphoric states more intensely. This may result in a relatively rapid attraction to and dependence on the drugs. For others feeling of tension or depression may be more acute, the usually get relief from taking drugs so the increase in the chance of the person becoming an addict. A persons environment can influence his dependence on a drug or drugs for instance, poor housing and are known to cause depression and anxiety. In some other cases, the effect of the drug taken affects the likelihood of dependency, here is the explanation: a person who takes heroine is more likely to become an addict than a person taking barbiturates.

 


WHY SOME DRUGS CAN CAUSE ADDICTION AND OTHERS DON'T 
The reason for these is that drugs are categorised as those that depress the central nervous system, those that stimulate the central nervous system and those that produces hallucinations and also affect the central nervous system.
The main group of drugs that depress the central nervous system are the narcotics, such as codeine, heroine, methadone, morphine, paregoric, nicotine, barbiturates, tranquilizers, alcohol and some sleeping pills. Drugs that stimulates the central nervous system include; Benzedrine and Dexedrine and others. Those that causes hallucination are known as hallucinogens or psychedelics some common examples are; LSD, DOM, DMT, MDA,THC and Mescaline. A very common example is marijuana although it is less powerful than others in these group.
