WHAT IS FAT AND OIL?
Oxford Learners Dictionary defines fat as;
  • A natural oily substance occurring in animal bodies, especially when deposited as a layer under the skin or around certain organs;
  • A fatty substance made from animal or plant products, used in cooking.
Our major focus today will be on the importance and negative effects of excess fat and oil on the health of an individual. We would discus why we need fat, what quantity we need, foods that contain fat, as well as the dangers of eating excess fatty foods. Let's now scrutinise our sub-topics in details.

                                     FAT CONTAINING FOODS
Majority of our meals whether cooked or eaten fresh contains a little amount of fat and oil. Some commonly consumed foods that contain fats and oils include;
  • butter,
  • oils,
  • margarine,
  • nuts,
  • mayonnaise,
  • sour cream,
  • lard,
  • meat,
  • fish,
  • cord liver etc.
                HEALTH BENEFITS OF EATING FATS AND OILS   
Research has shown that fats and oils are necessary for growth and development of the human body, this class of food like Carbohydrates are energy giving food.
 
 
 Further studies shows that fats and oil may gives more energy that the carbohydrate group. Moderate consumption of fat helps in body composition, since it makes up the outside layer of the cells in our body.
 
Healthy fats can help in removing constant cravings, prevent fast aging, improving the body system metabolism as well as balancing hormones. The body uses fat for production of reproductive hormones in both men and women. Fats also helps to lower cancer risk and also builds muscles and bones, other health benefits includes, aiding better brain function since the brain is made up of mostly fat and cholesterol, the saturated fats such as coconut oil, and palm oil helps to boost the immune system thereby helping to curb the action of fungal and bacterial infections.                     
 
                    NEGATIVE EFFECTS OF FAT AND OILS
The commonly known effect of excess fat is obesity, but research has shown that constant consumption of huge amount of fatty foods can cause hardening of the Arteries, Heart attack, stroke etc. while polyunsaturated oils are known to cause liver damage, lung deterioration , although moderate consumption of  healthy fat prevents aging, but excess fats can also cause premature aging, breast cancer and degeneration of reproductive organs.
 
               QUANTITY OF FATS REQUIRED AND MEDICAL RECOMMENDATIONS.
Since we have  known the health benefits and the negative effects of consuming of excess fats and oil, it is pertinent we know the required and recommended proportion needed by the body, for optimal performance.
 
While the body needs fat, the type found in animal foods which is saturated fat is not necessary in abundance. Only 25% of fatty foods like dairy products (milk, cheese etc.), meats, and fish should be consumed daily. It is recommended that to lose weight, no more than 10% of calories, should be fat calories.
        
For those with high cholesterol count of about 220 or more, doctors recommend eating of vitamins and vegetables such as; Onions, Spinach, Vitamin C, Chili pepper, and Apple, others include; Barley, Garlic, carrot (eaten raw), plantain etc. This foods helps lower the cholesterol count especially when combined with exercise.
For obese individual, foods containing fats and high cholesterol should be excluded from diet, regular and rigorous exercise must be carried out and other recommendations from the doctor.
