What is Stroke?
A stroke can affect
sensitive body organs, commonly affected areas include; memory, thought,
senses, speech, mobility and even behaviour. Stroke can cause permanent brain
damage and in some cases death. It has been estimated that over 800,000 people suffer from a new or recurrent stroke, someone dies of stroke every 4 minutes around the world.
It's a brain ailment which occur as a result sudden cut off of flow of blood to the brain. When this happens, the brain is deprived of adequate oxygen which will cause weakening and death of cells, and these will cause one side of the body to die.
Good a thing, stroke
has some warning signs and symptoms, which will prompt us before it manifest. We
are advice to immediately seek medical assistance when will notice these signs
and symptoms, so as to curb the adverse effect of stroke. We
should consider it as an emergency.
Countries like, Indonesia, Mongolia, Russia, Guyana and Kazakhstan are the top 5 countries with high stroke occurrence rate, while countries like, France, Qatar, Israel, Canada and Switzerland are the top lowest.
SYMPTOMS OF STROKE
Although
stroke symptoms are not same in everybody, as it varies for different
individuals based on the severity of the damage inflicted, as well as the type
of stroke (i.e. memory, mobility, speech, senses etc.) These symptoms and
warning signs can develop sudden and unexpected, or they can gradually happen
over several hours, days and weeks. Since we now know that it symptoms or
warning signs are either sudden or within a few days it is pertinent we stay
alert.
The
location of one’s stroke symptoms depends on which side of the brain is
affected, a defect on one side of the brain will affect the opposite side of
the body.
Below are
some of the common symptoms of stroke;
- Sudden trouble seeing with one or both eyes, or blur vision.
- Sudden splitting headache accompanied with extreme pressure and a throbbing sensation.
- Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, limbs or one side of the body.
- Sudden difficulty with mobility, loss of balance coordination, dizziness.
- Sudden paralysis of the face, limbs or one side of the body.
- Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or difficulty understanding other people.

WARNING SIGNS
If suddenly
notice you have difficulty in comprehending other peoples conversations, loses
of control of facial muscles, starts drooling, or have slurred speech, you
should immediately seek medical attention. In as much as we watch out for
ourselves, we should also try and watch out for other people around us, if we
notice any of the mentioned symptoms or warning signs we can help them
access medical attention. Waiting too
long can result in permanent damage or even death. It’s always said that
“prevention is better than cure” We should always take precautionary measures
against stroke, we can do this by reporting any symptoms that are suspicious,
even if they are minor.
