Today's topic is on epilepsy and seizures,  we shall focus basically on the causes of  the health challenge and how to manage it.

What is EPILEPSY?
Epilepsy is a term used to describe a condition of recurring seizures. Normally due to some chemical reaction in our bodies, we do experience cases of seizures, which do not usually last for long.
Epilepsy could be defined medically as a disorder involving two or more seizure attacks, unrelated to other medical conditions.

*It is important to note that having a seizure doesn't mean, you suffer from epilepsy.

Research have shown that, seizures occur when there is an abnormal surge of electrical activities in the brain, affecting mental activities for the duration of the attack.

Below are some of the reasons believed to be the cause of epilepsy, but it have always been credited to hereditary and genetic factors.
  1. Dementia - a chronic or persistent disorder of the mental processes caused by brain disease or injury and marked by memory disorders, personality changes, and impaired reasoning.(OXFORD)
  2. Brain hemorrhages - This a chronic brain ailment occurs when an artery burst in the brain causing localized bleeding
  3. Fever
  4.  Stroke.
  5. Brain malformation
 FIRST AID FOR EPILEPSY
Since epilepsy and seizure can occur at unwanted time and places, it is Godly of us to help those who suffer from ailment.
But we can't do much unless we have requisite knowledge on how to manage this case; below are some of the things we can do to help the patient.

1.Since seizure will leave the person unaware of his surrounding it is wise we clear the area around the affected individual to avoid injury.

2.Ease the person to the floor and cushion the head

3.Remove any cloth, or tie around the neck that will restrict free breathing

4.Do not try to hinder the persons movement

5.Do not feed the person liquid or food during this period

6.Turn the person gently one side to keep the airway unobstructed

7.Be friendly when consciousness returns

8.Do not attempt  respiration except otherwise

9.Sometimes a seizures can take a more passive form and can result in involuntary facial movement such as blank stare.

10.If the person is agitated, stay a safe distance away, but close enough to protect the person until full awareness has returned.
