WHAT IS CHOLERA?

Cholera is a deadly diarrhoea disease which can kill within a few hours,
if not detected and treated on time. It is caused by a bacterium called
vibrio cholerae. Cholera can be contracted by eating or drinking
food or water contaminated by the bacteria. It affects both children
and adults and was first diagnosed in 1961.
It has attacked most countries of the world such as India, Malawi,
Nigeria, Argentina, and other African nations, as a matter of fact the
disease has touched all continents of the world.
Statistics shows that at least 75-80% cases are treated successfully if detected on time.
SYMPTOMS OF CHOLERA;
The two major symptoms of the disease include: acute diarrhoea and
dehydration. Other symptoms are not usually prominent. Although the
disease can stay in a victims body for 1-10 days without being noticed.
Unless when it graduates to acute stage.
PREVENTIVE / CONTROL MEASURES;
- The disease can be prevented by consistent environmental sanitation, eating or drinking uncontaminated food or water.
- Proper waste disposal, whether domestic or industrial.
- Frequent enlightenment from health bodies on the dangers of the epidemic
- Fast response from health personnel to diarrhoea cases, so as to prevent further escalation to the secondary state.
- hand washing can help to control the disease.
- Those already affected should be placed under close surveillance to prevent further spread.
cholera can be treated through the administration of oral rehydration vaccines.
